History of TACID

“TACID” is the Tacoma Area Coalition for Individuals with Disabilities.

The organization was established in 1980 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non profit corporation by the end of that year. The TACID Center was built under a Referendum 37 agreement between the State of Washington, the City of Tacoma and Tacoma Community College. The facility opened  in April 1984. It is owned by the city on land belonging to the college.  The space is operated by TACID.

Since 1984 use of the facility and the number and scope of programs offered has significantly increased. What was four founding disability organization has grown to more than forty. Six different programs serve more than 3,000 different individuals each year.

From the Executive Director

"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest" - Benjamin Franklin

The communities of Tacoma-Pierce County is one of the greatest in the State of Washington.  We're a community rich in natural beauty and diverse in its population.  We kow how to roll our sleves up and how to get things done.  My committment is that TACID play a major part in this community by serving as the hub of information, support activities, and advocacy by and for people living with disabilities in our community.

It is easy for non-disabled people to overlook the needs of people with disabilities.  It isn't so easy for the non-disabled to realize what they're missing by not including people with disabilities in the building and shaping of our community.

Our job at TACID is not only to invest in knowlegde for people with disabilities, but also to invest in knowlegdge for those without.

-Ken Gibson, Executive Director
